The following are books that offer useful perspectives on education and/or parenting:
The Schools Our Children Deserve
by Alfie Kohn
Kohn is one of education’s most provocative writers and this book makes an excellent case against teaching in the traditional way and for teaching and learning that is authentic, engaging and motivating for children.
Emotional Intelligence
by Daniel Goleman
Goleman’s thesis purports that the cluster of traits he terms “emotional intelligence” is more critical to one’s success and happiness than IQ. He synthesizes mounds of research to make his point. A bestseller, this book is of interest not only in raising children, but also in thinking about adults.
Mindset
by Carol Dweck
Dweck's research reveals that students with a growth mindset (as opposed to a fixed mindset), are more likely to continue learning despite obstacles and challenges. Parents and teachers can support this growth mindset by encouraging effort rather than "smarts." Written for a lay audience, Dweck nonetheless taps important research and suggests how all of us can become persistent learners and lead those around us to do the same.
