Service Learning

Every Blue Oak student enjoys the freedom and responsibility of membership in a very special community, one that exists within the walls of the School and also extends into the larger community outside of the School.

As students in kindergarten through eighth grade become involved in the larger community, they develop a sense of global awareness and responsibility.

Blue Oak is committed to incorporating service learning at each stage of a child’s developmental process. Service to the greater community has myriad benefits: it promotes selflessness, allows children to be positive agents of change, and offers them the opportunity to truly engage in and be a part of the democratic process – physically, intellectually and emotionally.

When children are given the chance to take the initiative, they focus less on being consumers in our world and more on learning how they can work cooperatively with others to affect change. Beginning in kindergarten, children participate in valuable pursuits that then spiral through the grades as they grow and mature. Eighth graders often serve as role models to the younger students, having completed a variety of activities as a prerequisite for graduation.

More importantly, when Blue Oak students graduate, they do so with a strong desire to continue community involvement. Cohesive, ongoing experiences with service learning help children become active, compassionate adults with a strong sense of what it means to be global citizens.
