Laboratory Safety Contract

1. Running, horseplay, and practical jokes are inappropriate in the lab.

2. Read and understand all instructions before coming to lab to save time, eliminate confusion, and prevent accidents.

3. Conduct only the planned experiment. If you want to try a new experiment, clear it with your instructor first.

4. Long hair must be tied back and safety goggles and aprons must be worn whenever experimental work is in progress.

5. Note the location and proper use of the fire extinguisher and fire blanket. Always notify the instructor of any fire.

6. If in doubt about proper procedures, chemical disposal, hazards, or equipment use, ask for help.

7. Do not taste or eat anything in the lab. Do not touch chemicals with your hands.

8. If chemicals are accidentally spilled on the skin or in the eyes, flush the area immediately with large quantities of cold water.

9. Minor burns should be treated immediately by holding the burned area under cold running water.

10. Report all injuries (including cuts, burns, etc.) to the instructor in charge, regardless of how minor.

11. Use balances carefully: (1) do not mass hot objects and (2) do not place powdered or liquid chemicals directly on the balance pan; use massing paper or a container.

12. When finished working: (1) turn off the water/or hot plate (2) clean up your working area and equipment, (3) return equipment to its proper place, (4) return aprons and safety goggles to their proper places and (5) wash your hands.
